"Moving Beyond the Myth of the 'Perfect' Mother" is a supportive and empowering workshop created specifically for mothers navigating the complex emotional landscape of the postpartum period.  This isn't about achieving an impossible ideal; it's about embracing the real, authentic experience of motherhood, with all its joys and challenges. in a safe and non-judgmental space, we will explore:

  • Deconstructing the Myth: We'll dissect the unrealistic expectations and societal pressures that contribute to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt in new mothers.  We'll examine how these myths can impact mental health and well-being.
  • Understanding Postpartum Mood Disorders: We'll delve into the realities of PPD and other postpartum mood disorders, exploring their causes, symptoms, and the various ways they can manifest.  Gain a deeper understanding of the biological, psychological, and social factors at play.
  • Challenging Negative Self-Talk:  Learn to identify and challenge the negative thoughts and self-criticism that often accompany PPD and the pressure to be "perfect."  Develop strategies to cultivate self-compassion and reframe your inner dialogue.
  • Redefining Motherhood:  Explore what motherhood means to you, independent of societal expectations.  We'll focus on discovering your own strengths as a mother and celebrating your unique parenting style.
  • Prioritizing Self-Care Without Guilt:  Learn practical and sustainable self-care strategies that fit into the realities of new motherhood.  We'll address the common guilt associated with taking time for yourself and reframe self-care as an essential component of good parenting.
  • Building a Supportive Community: Connect with other mothers who understand the challenges you're facing. Share experiences, offer support, and build lasting connections with women on similar journeys.  Reduce feelings of isolation and create a community of understanding.
  • Embracing Imperfection:  Learn to let go of the pursuit of perfection and embrace the messy, beautiful, and imperfect reality of motherhood.  Develop resilience and learn to navigate the inevitable ups and downs with greater self-compassion.
  • Creating a Personalized Action Plan:  Develop a tailored plan to support your ongoing well-being.  This plan will include practical strategies for managing symptoms, building resilience, and fostering self-love.

This workshop is led by Olivia Brown, PhD, LPC, a licensed therapist with extensive experience supporting women through the postpartum period.  We believe that every mother deserves to feel supported, empowered, and free from the burden of unrealistic expectations. "Moving Beyond the Myth of the 'Perfect' Mother" is a journey toward self-acceptance, resilience, and embracing the joy and authenticity of your own unique motherhood experience.

Olivia Brown, PhD, LPC

Dr. Brown received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Kansas, where her doctoral studies focused on the relationship between therapist empathy and client outcomes.  She authored a research article on ACT for anxiety disorders, along with other publications on clinical psychology.  Dr. Brown has trained and researched with experts in the fields of ACT, mindfulness, and depression.  Throughout her career, she has completed intensive programs in ERP, self-compassion therapy, and mindfulness meditation.  Additionally, Dr. Brown’s pre-doctoral internship at the Central Iowa VA provided the opportunity to receive extensive training in the use of empirically-supported treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder including Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).
